“The most successful students will be those who use AI to help make conceptual connections for developing ideas. Students who learn to use AI ethically and productively may learn not only at an exponentially higher rate than others but also in a way that allows them to remain competitive throughout their careers. They will have a deeper understanding of the given subject matter, because they will know how to get their questions answered. Rather than atrophying, their curiosity muscle will be strengthened..”
Salman Kahn, author of Brave New World
AI pedagogy refers to the principles, methods, and practices involved in effectively teaching and learning about, with, and through the use of artificial intelligence technologies.
AI pedagogy includes:
1) Teaching about AI and its concepts, theories, algorithms, ethics, and implications
2) Teaching with AI and leveraging AI tools such as adaptive learning platforms, intelligent tutoring systems, and automated grading systems to support teaching, enhance personalized learning, improve assessment methods, and streamline educational workflows
3) Teaching through AI to transform how learning happens through strategies such as AI-driven virtual simulations, immersive experiences, personalized learning paths, and intelligent agents.
This AIMed newsletter will address the latter two categories (teaching with and through AI) together as there is significant overlap of these two domains under AI pedagogy in healthcare professional schools:
1) AI-Enabled Continual Case-Based Learning. Students can autonomously use generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to continually prompt their questions for AI to support their curiosity with realistic and detailed answers to the clinical scenarios. The content can accommodate variations and complexity of the clinical scenarios to mimic the real-world versions of the clinical world without imposing memorization to the students. This continual and dynamic AI method of teaching can offer a continual and interactive real-world resource for the students to generate outputs to learn from.
2) AI-Enhanced Individual Precision Learning. This methodology uses an adaptive AI system that personalizes the learning experience based on each individual student’s knowledge level, learning velocity, and assessment performance. AI is leveraged to dynamically adjust the content level of difficulty as well as provide the appropriate educational resources for the student to deliver precision learning. This tailored method of precision learning will continually reinforce the weak areas for the students and optimize the teaching effort for the professors.
3) AI-Enriched Simulation and Virtual Reality Environments. For realistic and immersive clinical education and training, AI can be integrated with virtual reality to render it “intelligent” reality. AI can be used to enable a dynamic and iterative learning experience that combines AI with extended reality. Examples of this intelligent reality include emergency room scenarios, cardiopulmonary arrest drills, surgical procedures, and ICU management decisions. This continual immersive method of learning can improve critical thinking and procedural skills without imparting the risk to patients while reducing resources for training.
We hope that a few schools will adopt these AI methodologies for teaching and change the traditional paradigm of learning in our health professional schools forever. Change in education, particularly healthcare education, may be exceedingly slow. As the aforementioned author Salman Khan said “Innovation never comes from the established institutions.”.
AI pedagogy will be a special track this year at AIMed25.
