Rachel SC Friedman MD, MHS
Program Director
KP Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency
Dr. Rachel Summer Claire Friedman is the Program Director at Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Friedman received her BA magna cum laude with Highest Honors in History of Medicine from Harvard University and her MD and MHS degrees from Yale School of Medicine. She completed her family medicine residency and Integrative Medicine Fellowship at Sutter Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency in Santa Rosa, CA. As part of the founding faculty, she helped establish KAISER PERMANENTE Santa Rosa FMR in 2018 as an early adopter of telehealth and a 21st century approach to residency training. Dr. Friedman and her faculty have published and presented in multiple venues about innovation in a variety of curricular areas, including the role of telehealth in equitable care delivery, patient involvement in residency selection, weight-inclusive medicine, GIS mapping for healthcare gaps, climate-forward residency practices, and the integration of AI scribes into residency training. In the past year, Dr. Friedman has launched three scholarly projects around AI in medical education and was invited to be on the plenary panel at the UCSF Jack Rodnick Colloquium about AI in Medicine. Dr. Friedman's leadership philosophy combines systems thinking and jazz improvisation — creating spaces for authentic connection, leveraging our differences as strengths, and adapting to changes with collaborative creativity. She sees hope for the sustainability of primary care as a career with the thoughtful incorporation of AI and envisions residency as the sandbox for creating a more equitable future healthcare system.
