Dr. Justin Iannello is the current VISN 21 (Sierra Pacific Network) Chief Digital Health, Artificial Intelligence, and Health Informatics Officer for the Veterans Health Administration. Dr. Iannello serves in his roles as a physician executive and physician informaticist where he is dual board certified in Internal Medicine (ABIM) and Clinical Informatics (ABPM). He also has advanced certification through the American Board of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (ABAIM).
Dr. Iannello practices clinically as a hospitalist and previously completed a Chief Residency in Quality and Patient Safety at the University of South Florida/James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa, Florida. He is a prior graduate of the VA American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) 10x10 Program, certified as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and a previous graduate of the VHA Change Practitioner Program and VHA Inpatient Flow Academy. Dr. Iannello has published as first author on topics such as early warning sepsis system design in the emergency room and inpatient wards; Joint Commission ORYX inpatient tobacco treatment measures workflow improvement; menu, order set, and template design framework; and clinical documentation improvement.
In addition, Dr. Iannello was recognized on the Center for Health AI Regulation, Governance & Ethics (CHARGE) 2025’s List of “48 Hospital and Health System Chief AI Officers to Know”. He recently submitted a manuscript on healthcare organization AI readiness that has been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal as well as serves as a guest presenter and panel member in various forums to provide expertise on the integration of AI in healthcare. Dr. Iannello is also writing book chapters on AI and the healthcare workforce and AI for workforce wellness for a new AI in Primary Care book to be submitted for publication in collaboration with ABAIM.
